Green Jobs

Definition

A nationally recognized definition of green jobs does not exist, and green industries and occupations have not been categorized at the national level. This requires individual states, at this time, to establish a definition of green jobs that relates to the business activities within their respective states. For New Mexico, a broad definition of a green job is any job where at least a portion of the tasks have a focus on environmental quality, energy and resource efficiency, or sustainable practices.

The four green economy core areas include:

  • Renewable Energy
  • Clean Manufacturing
  • Energy Effi ciency
  • Research, Development, and Administration

The following is a list of occupations that have been identified as potentially having a larger concentration of green tasks. While this list includes many occupations, it is important to note that there are many occupations that can be considered green beyond this list, and this list is merely a sample of some of those jobs that are more likely to be green. This list incorporates occupations identified by New Mexico, other states, and the Department of Labor.
